Learning the ancient Arabic art of "Magramah", Macramè.

Tuesday 10th February 2026

What a beautiful and authentic morning we spent with Anna, Gabriella, and Amalia in Atessa learning the technique and history of the ancient Arabic art of "Magramah" (Fringe), Macramè.

We started the morning once more at the gem of a museum 'MuseAte', this time on the top floor where we discovered amazing intricate textile work by local artisans, Macrame, lacework and crochet in many techniques and styles were on display. We were drawn to a beautiful piece of work donated by a nun made of many spirals which Anna explained was a symbol of infinity, another stunning piece that had taken 20 years to complete, what dedication! Before leaving we had another sneak peak at the artist Aligi Sassu's work on a different floor. How lucky to have such an important collection of art right on our doorstep. If you are an art lover it is a must see so please contact us to arrange a private viewing of the Palazzo Ferri and its works of art.
After the museum visit we made our way to Albergo Centrale for our macramè workshop where Gabriella and Amalia were waiting for us with the most delicious tart and carnival pastries, 'chiacchere', to have with a coffee before our lesson. We spent a lovely 15 minutes chatting and practising our Italian, with Max on hand when translation was needed, and then the workshop began....
Amalia is a fantastic teacher and artist, she explained in detail how each knot was formed, demonstrated each one and was on hand if help was needed. The 3 knots taught today were enough to be able to have the knowledge to go home and make plant pot holders, jewellery, wall hangings, and more. It was a fun and relaxing morning, surprisingly engaging, and meditative. Everyone left with a new skill and are 100% coming back for more.
We will produce videos/tutorials with Amalia demonstrating more knots to practice at home. Gabriella's Lemon Custard cream cake and the typical Carnival sweets "Chiacchiere" just to die for.... Recipes to follow.
