DAY 3
After breakfast, venture on a beautiful bike ride along the Gustav Line. The German Troops cleverly used the mountainous territory creating an immaginary line that ran from Ortona to the East, to Cassino in the West making it extremely difficult for the allied troops allied to break through and progres towards Rome. This particular area was the theatre of many fierce battles and heroic actions to free Abruzzo from the Germans. You will ride from Fara San Martino up a short climb to reach Civitella Messer Raimondo. Here you will learn about the heroic actions of the partisan group “Brigata Majella” and the incredible bond that was formed between them and the British Troops. Before leaving you will taste a slice of the typical local almond cake “Torta Civitellese” with a coffee. Back on the saddle head towards lake Casoli, then ride up a fairly steep climb to reach the old ancient town of Gessopalena, known as “The Shining Rock”. Visit this open-air museum, where you can see some of the original 12th century houses carved in the rocks. Stop for a light aperitivo in one of the bars in the town centre and mingle with the very welcoming local people. From the centre of Gessopalena we invite you to ride a further 6km towards "La Morgia", before heading back to Fara San Martino along quiet country roads. In the evening traditional Abruzzese dinner at the restaurant with typical arrosticini (Lamb skewers) and pallotte cacio e ove (cheesy puff balls in tomato sauce). (WINE NOT INCLUDED)
DAY 4
Breakfast. At the agreed time and point you will meet our expert professional certified walking guide who will accompany you along the beautiful mountain footpath and through amazing woodland to reach the historic town of Lama dei Peligni. The distance is about 6.5 km each way, it requires a medium level of fitness, and it presents some natural challenges like low branches, loose stones, tree roots and a few short steep climbs, please bring plenty of water. An amazing walk through this beautiful holm oak and beech forest, enjoying tranquillity, stunning views, and learning about its formation and the wildlife present here. You will arrive in Lama dei Peligni, a town highly regarded for its blend of dramatic natural landscape and rich cultural traditions, earning the "Bandiera Arancione" (Orange Flag) award for excellence in tourism and hospitality. Stop for a bite to eat in a local bar and we recommend you also taste the local typical pastry speciality called “Sfogliatella di Lama”. At your own leisure you will head back to the starting point. We will indicate points of interest along the road for you to stop and visit before arriving in Palena.
